The diaconate in Catholic high school education: A living witness

The presence of Catholic deacons in secondary education offers a unique and powerful witness to the faith. As deacons serving in both parish and school ministry, we encounter countless opportunities each day to bring Christ’s presence into the lives of students, faculty, and families.

Our ministry extends well beyond the theology classroom. We assist with liturgies, answer questions about the Catholic faith, pray with students before exams, and provide pastoral support during times of personal struggle. Through these daily interactions, students come to see the Church not merely as an institution, but as a living community of faith and service.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is using our school chapel as a living classroom. Through guided tours, students discover the meaning behind sacred spaces, liturgical objects, stained-glass windows, and the lives of the saints. These experiences often inspire a deeper appreciation for Catholic tradition and spirituality.

We also encourage students to participate actively in the liturgical life of the school as lectors, servers, and choir members, helping them grow as leaders and disciples. Through teaching, service, and pastoral presence, the diaconate plays a vital role in Catholic education, helping young people encounter Christ and recognize God’s presence in their daily lives.

On a personal note, we love what we do. We are called “DK” and Deacon Pete by the students at school. It’s work, but it’s also a lot of fun.

Deacon Kevin Combs and Deacon Pete Fiore serve parishes in the Diocese of Paterson and are theology teachers at The Academy of St. Elizabeth.
