Bishop, diocesan communications staff clinch 2 media awards

Last week, the Catholic Media Association (CMA) honored Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney and the Paterson Diocesan communications staff with two Catholic Media Awards.

Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney, with the communications staff, collected an honorable mention for Best Social Media Account for Bishop Sweeney’s Instagram account, @bishopkevinsweeney. Cecile Pagliarulo, digital media specialist in the diocese’s communication office, collaborates with Bishop Sweeney on the account. Pagliarulo creates video reels and graphics and posts messages via text from the bishop.

Michael Wojcik, managing editor of The Beacon, won an honorable mention for Best Sports Journalism — Sports Feature or Column for his article, ‘Inspired Catholic Charities volunteer, C.J. Hanson, drafted into NFL by Kansas City Chiefs.” The story was published in The Beacon on May 16, 2024. Wojcik writes about Hanson, a 2019 graduate of DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, who volunteered at the Department for Persons with Disabilities, of diocesan Catholic Charities, having served its residents since he was a child. The Chiefs selected Hanson in the 2024 NFL draft.

The CMA recognizes and celebrates excellence in journalism, communications, and other forms of media.
