Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney celebrated Ash Wednesday, March 5, the first day of Lent, with a Mass in the chapel of St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson.
Bishop Sweeney blessed the ashes before he and Deacon Lawrence J. Duffy, pastoral care director of St. Joseph’s Health, distributed them on employees’ heads during the Mass. Sister of Charity Patricia Mennor, St. Joseph’s vice president of mission, also participated in the Mass.
Afterward, Bishop Sweeney visited patients’ rooms to give them ashes and pray. He also distributed ashes to some nurses.
