Nadia Murad, the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner, spoke on Nov. 20 at the World Leaders Forum at Seton Hall University in South Orange. The university’s School of Diplomacy and International Relations hosted the event.
Murad is a leading advocate for survivors of genocide and sexual violence. She received the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize and the Sakharov Prize. Her memoir, The Last Girl, tells her inspiring and harrowing story of her survival as a captive of the Islamic State.
Hundreds of students and members of the community attended the address. Earlier in the day, students participated in a book signing at the School of Diplomacy and spoke one-on-one with Murad.
“It has been a privilege to welcome Nadia back to Seton Hall and to engage with her personally as a community. Her tireless advocacy is crucial to raising awareness about genocide against the Yazidi people and the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. She is an inspiration to our students,” said Courtney Smith, Ph.D., dean of the School of Diplomacy and vice dean of the School of Law.
