Prayer group to celebrate centennial of St. Therese of Lisieux’s canonization

Carol Bsarany was diagnosed with cancer 18 years ago. During treatment, she prayed to St. Therese of Lisieux, also known as the “Little Flower,” asking for health. Bsarany also promised St. Therese to bring people to her to get to Jesus.

Since then, Bsarany has been visiting the Shrine of St. Therese at 54 Rock Lane in Boonton — and now daily in retirement.

“I was completely cured of cancer, and I have fulfilled my promise to St. Therese tenfold,” Bsarany said.

Four years ago, Bsarany opened a ministry to honor St. Therese during prayer services at the shrine. The St. Therese Prayer Group grew so large that prayer services were moved to St. Catherine of Siena Church in Mountain Lakes. Father Michael Parisi, St. Catherine’s pastor, allowed the group to hold weekly Tuesday prayer services. Those prayer services will resume in the church on Tuesday, May 6 at 1 p.m.

This year, the St. Therese Prayer Group will celebrate the centennial of St. Therese’s canonization on Saturday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at St. Catherine’s — precisely 100 years after her canonization on May 17, 1925. A reception will be held afterward in the gym.

Also, Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney will again celebrate St. Therese’s feast day at St. Catherine’s on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. He led the event for the past two years.

The Shrine of St. Thérèse represents the gratitude of its founder, Achille Arci. He made and a promise to her in the 1920s after he was cured of an illness. Today, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Boonton owns and cares for the shrine.

St. Therese was a Discalced Carmelite nun in France who died on Sept. 30, 1897, at 24 years old.
