Paterson’s Mother Church displays faith at Palm Sunday Mass

On March 29, worshippers filled the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, N.J., joining Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney in commemorating Palm Sunday, which marks the start of Holy Week, during an afternoon Spanish Mass.

Bishop Sweeney was the celebrant and homilist of the Mass at St. John’s, the Mother Church of the Paterson Diocese in New Jersey. Outside the cathedral, the bishop blessed the palm branches of the faithful, many of them dressed in clothing reminiscent of Jesus’ time, before processing into St. John’s for the Mass.

Msgr. Geno Sylva, St. John’s rector and diocesan vicar for special projects, concelebrated the liturgy with the bishop. Father Starli J. Castanos, a cathedral parochial vicar, was the master of ceremonies for the Mass. Deacon German Vargas assisted with the liturgy.
