Obituary: Sister Jo Ann Bromley, Sister of Charity, 89

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on March 11 at Holy Family Chapel in Convent Station, Morris Township, N.J. The liturgy honored Sister Jo Ann Bromley, formerly Sister Teresa Joseph, a Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth. She died on March 7 at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, N.J., at age 89. She had served as a Sister of Charity for 70 years.

Born in 1936 in Newark, N.J., Sister Bromley joined the Sisters of Charity in 1955.

Sister Bromley earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the College of St. Elizabeth, now St. Elizabeth University, in Convent Station. She also earned a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. She studied at Mundelein College in Chicago, Ill., and at Montclair State College, now Montclair State University, in Montclair, N.J.

She also completed Montclair State College’s Residential Care Operator Training Program.

Sister Bromley served in the ministry of education as a teacher at the former Holy Cross School in Harrison, N.J, and the former St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Paterson, N.J., and as principal of St. Joseph Elementary School in Paterson and St. Michael’s School in Newark.

After many years in education, Sister Bromley changed ministries. She became the administrator of Mother Seton Manor in Montclair and Caritas Community in Jersey City, N.J., both residences for retired Sisters of Charity. For many years, she also served as administrator of Mount St. Andrew Villa in Paramus, N.J., where she continued to minister to the elderly.

When Mount St. Andrew Villa closed, Sister Bromley participated in a Transition in Ministry Program at St. Joseph University Medical Center in Paterson. After completing the program, she became coordinator of volunteers at St. Vincent Nursing Home, now Complete Care at St. Vincent’s, in Cedar Grove, N.J.

Sister Bromley was predeceased by her parents, James and Josephine; her brothers, Joseph, Edward, Thomas, William, and Harvey Anderson; and her sister, Jeanne Steinberg. She is survived by her Sisters of Charity community, especially Sister Kathy Mirenda; her sister, Barbara Osborne; and many family members, including nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins.

Burial followed in Holy Family Cemetery in Convent Station.
