Inaugural Guardian Mass honors first responders’ ultimate sacrifice

On Saturday, May 2, at 10 a.m., the Paterson Diocese in New Jersey will hold its first Guardian Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, N.J., to pray for first responders, their families, and guardians who have been lost in the past year. Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney will celebrate the Mass.

The Guardian Mass begins a new tradition in the diocese. Last May’s 25th and final Blue Mass honored law enforcement and their families. The Guardian Mass now includes fire, EMS, emergency communications, management, and their families.

During the Mass, the lives lost in or as a result of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be remembered. This year marks the 25th anniversary of those tragic events.

The Mass will honor guardians who died last year, including Lt. Peter E. Bruncati, SFC. William A. Casey, Sgt. Lee E. Hendrickson, SPC. Steven C. Tiboni, SFC. and Sean W. Acker of the New Jersey State Police, and Firefighter Howard Bennett of the Camden Fire Department.

A barbecue will follow the Mass. All are welcome.

Parking will be available in the parking garage across from the Rodimer Center.

If you plan to attend, call June Fiduccia, the Guardian Mass coordinator, at 973-687-3029.
