Fulbright scholarship sends Chatham parishioner to Spain for work on leadership project

Karen Boroff, Ph.D., professor of management and dean emerita of the Stillman School of Business of Seton Hall University in South Orange, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Madrid, Spain, for the 2025 spring semester.

Boroff belongs to St. Patrick Parish in Chatham, where she is an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and catechist for elementary school children.

The U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board awarded Boroff the scholarship. This award follows Boroff’s 35 years of distinguished academic service at Seton Hall.

Boroff will use her expertise in management, human resources, labor relations, and negotiations for her Fulbright project, “Leadership, Creativity, Collaborations: Transforming Concepts into Practice,” at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), in Madrid, Spain.

UPM is a partner school with the Management Center Innsbruck, Austria, where Boroff served as a visiting professor.

The project will focus on equipping leaders with competencies in change management, as all higher education institutions seek to navigate the ever-changing landscape of academe.

Boroff has been in discussions with her faculty collaborator and mentor, Isabel Ortiz-Marcos, Ph.D., an associate professor of engineering projects and project management at UPM. Boroff will offer workshops throughout the spring 2025 semester to help advance our expertise in managing change at UPM.

“Dr. Boroff will offer workshops throughout the spring 2025 semester to help advance our expertise in managing change at our institution. Her learning modules on leadership will widen our resources for students who want to improve their ability to lead teams,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz said she looks forward to collaborating with Boroff on preparing a case study in Spanish and English to submit to a case research conference in June and for eventual publication.

For spring break next year, Seton Hall students will have the opportunity to participate in an international trip and study Organizational Behavior, BMGT 2503, at UPM. They will immerse themselves in Spanish culture while intensively completing a core business requirement.

Seton Hall and UPM are exploring an agreement and blended exchanges for academic certificates in fashion design, blended engineering, and entrepreneurship.

Boroff had served as Seton Hall’s interim provost and executive vice president. She led the formation of a university-wide leadership development program for undergraduate students, and championed budget transparency through responsibility-centered management. She instituted innovative summer learning experiences, including boot camps in cybersecurity and entrepreneurial endeavors. Boroff also initiated Seton Hall’s faith-based outreach, engaging with faith leaders across New Jersey.

Fulbright U.S. Scholars are faculty, researchers, administrators, and established professionals teaching or conducting research with institutes abroad. They engage in cutting-edge research and expand their professional networks. Upon returning to their home countries, institutions, labs, and classrooms, they share their stories and often become active supporters of international exchange.
