Franciscan Father Claude Lenehan, 97

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Church in Butler for Franciscan Father Claude Lenehan, who died on July 5 at St. Lawrence Friary in Beacon, N.Y. He was 97.

Father Lenehan lived in St. Anthony Friary retirement house in Butler before moving to St. Lawrence in 2022.

Born in Wallington, Father Lenehan entered the Franciscan Order in 1949 and professed his final vows as a friar in 1953. He was ordained a priest on June 9, 1955.

Father Lenehan served St. Mary Parish in Pompton Lakes from 1958 to 1964. For many years, he assisted at area parishes on weekends.

For more than 20 years, Father Lenehan was part of the Ministry of the Word team for Holy Name Province (now the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe), preaching and giving retreats at various locations throughout the United States. For 10 years, he also ministered in the Retrouvaille Program, helping married couples.

Visitation for Father Claude Lenehan will be held on July 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s followed by 11 a.m. Mass.
