Deacon Roger Lacouture, 88

A funeral Mass was held on Dec. 11 at Resurrection Church in Randolph for Deacon Roger Eugene Lacouture of Boonton, formally Randolph, who died on Dec. 5 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was 88.

Deacon Lacouture was ordained a permanent deacon of the Paterson Diocese in 1997. He served Resurrection for more than 20 years until he retired from active ministry.

Born in Woonsocket, R.I., to John and Cora Lacouture in 1936, Deacon Lacouture graduated from Oblate Seminar High School in Bucksport, Maine. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bryant College in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 and later in the Army Reserves.

Deacon Lacouture worked for more than 50 years for the Kresge Corporation, starting in the stockroom in 1956. He soon enrolled in the management trainee program. Deacon Lacouture later became the general manager of Kresge and Kmart stores in Braintree, Mass.; Cohoes, N.Y.; Worcester, Mass.; Scotia, N.Y.; and Randolph, N.J.

Deacon Lacouture married Sheila Ann Laffan of Woonsocket in 1961. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in June.

He volunteered for many organizations, including Hope House in Dover, part of diocesan Catholic Charities, Ministry Alliance, and the Randolph Economic Development Committee. He also served on committees and filled roles at Resurrection, teaching religious education.

Deacon Lacouture is survived by his wife, Sheila; his son, David, and his wife, Kathy; his daughter, Mary Anne, and her husband, Richard; his daughter, Rachel, and her husband, Steven; and six grandchildren: Matthew, Katherine, William, Drew, Elizabeth, and Stephanie. He is preceded in death by his son, Andrew James Lacouture, and brother, Leo Lacouture.
