An Episcopal minister and Roman Catholic religious sister on March 23 led a gathering of Christians of various denominations in sharing their perspectives about having hope in Christ at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Parsippany during the second of three Christian Unity Roundtable events.
The Paterson Diocese has been holding three roundtables on the remaining Sundays in March, one in each of its counties. Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Wayne hosted the first roundtable on March 16. Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Sparta will hold the final roundtable on March 30. The event will occur from 4 to 6 p.m.
The roundtable panelists were Sister of Charity Rosemary Moynihan, vice president of mission integration of Trinitas Regional Medical Center, and Rev. Susan R. Ironside, rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Madison. Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney attended the event and spoke to those assembled. More Protestants participated in the second roundtable.

The roundtables are also a way for the diocese to invite Christians everywhere to celebrate the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea in a spirit of receptive ecumenism. They also are designed to lead to the diocesan Jubilee of Christian Unity ecumenical prayer service at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson at 3 p.m. on June 22, the feast of Corpus Christi.
These informal gatherings provide an opportunity for people of Christian faiths to listen, share, and learn from one another. They also include small-group sharing. Each roundtable follows the same format, with different panelists as available.
At the roundtables, Msgr. George Hundt, pastor of St. Gerard Parish and Our Lady of Pompei Parish, both in Paterson, introduces the Jubilee Year. Msgr. Raymond Kupke, pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Hawthorne and the diocesan archivist, speaks about the Council of Nicaea.
