Chester native contributes to podcast probing faith and baseball

“Baseball: Beyond Belief,” a new documentary by Paulist Productions, is explored in depth on a recent episode of the Paulist podcast, Deacons Pod, which uniquely delves into the relationship between faith and baseball.

The film is based on the New York Times bestselling book “Baseball as a Road to God: Seeing Beyond the Game” by former New York University President John Sexton. It explores how baseball and faith intertwine in powerful and surprising ways. The film will air nationally on television on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, at 4 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.

In the episode of Deacon’s Pod, Deacon Mike Hayes of the Paulist Deacon Affiliates speaks with Sexton, John Scheinfeld, director of the documentary, and Paulist Father Thomas Gibbons, president of Paulist Productions. Father Gibbons is a native of St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish in Chester, N.J., and was ordained a Paulist priest in May 2012. Today, he lives at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community in Los Angeles, Calif., where he served as a former associate pastor.

Deacons Pod is a podcast for everyone. But it’s especially designed to inspire and offer hope to people on the “threshold of faith”: those considering going to Church and those considering leaving Church. Deacons Pod is hosted by permanent deacons who are PaulistDeacon Affiliates. The podcast is produced by the Paulist Fathers.
