What do plenary indulgences have to do with the Jubilee of Hope?

The simple act of walking could be spiritually significant during this Jubilee of Hope 2025. Just walking through the Holy Door in Rome or to one of many designated pilgrimage places in the Paterson Diocese could help participating faithful receive a plenary indulgence during this holy year, as decreed by Pope Francis.

“Indulgences are the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven,” said Father Manning, diocesan vicar for evangelization for the Paterson Diocese, quoting the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Father Manning spoke in a video about plenary and partial indulgences, which is part of a series in English and Spanish that the diocese created about the holy year. The series covers topics such as the Holy Door and pilgrimages. In the video, Father Manning talked with Joana Schmidt, associate director of diocesan catechesis.

“Receiving a plenary indulgence requires sincere repentance on our part. Then certain conditions need to be met, most commonly full repentance, confession of our sins, reception of holy communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, Pope Francis,” Father Manning said.
