Seminarian eager to serve God’s people as transitional deacon

Jender Medina of the Paterson Diocese was one of four third-year seminarians studying at Immaculate Conception Seminary in South Orange who professed their faith and took a fidelity oath during a Mass in the chapel on April 7. These seminarians will be ordained to the transitional diaconate in a few weeks on the next step in answering God’s call to the priesthood.

Medina, 36, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate in the Paterson Diocese on Sat., June 14 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in the Haskell neighborhood of Wanaque at 10:30 a.m.  His home parish is St. Andrew the Apostle in Clifton. Medina anticipates being called to ordination as a diocesan priest in 2026.

The other three Immaculate Conception seminarians who professed their faith and took a fidelity oath on April 7 were Konrad Kosiek of the Newark Archdiocese and Thomas Pluhar and James Prumos, both of the Metuchen Diocese. Msgr. Gerard McCarren, the seminary’s rector and dean, celebrated the Mass and presided over the ceremony.

During the profession of faith, the candidates recited the creed and took an oath to uphold the teachings and authority of the Catholic Church. They each signed these promises with their hand on the book of the Gospels. They invoked God’s assistance to uphold these commitments in their ministry as deacons.
