A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Family Chapel in the Convent Station neighborhood of Morris Township, N.J., for Sister of Charity June Favata, formerly Sister Ellen Jude, who died on Sept. 8 at St. Catherine of Siena Health Care Facility in Caldwell, N.J. She was 85. She was a member of the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth for 64 years.
Born in Teaneck, N.J., Sister Favata was the daughter of Ciro and Elizabeth (Miraglia) Favata. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of St. Elizabeth, now St. Elizabeth University in Morris Township, and a master’s degree in English and communication arts from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind.
Sister Favata taught at St. Teresa School in Summit, N.J., the former St. Mary High School in Jersey City, N.J., and the former St. Patrick High School in Elizabeth, N.J. In 1969, she began her more than five-decade ministry at St. Vincent Academy in Newark, N.J., where she was an English teacher, program director, vice principal, administrative director, and ultimately, president of St. Vincent Academy, Inc.
She received many honors for excellence in education, including Princeton University’s Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching.
Sister Favata was also the director of central communication at the Convent of St. Elizabeth.
Sister June was predeceased by her parents, Ciro and Elizabeth Favata, and her sisters, Dolores Butler and Sally Stewart Colosanti. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, her dearest friend, Sister Margaret Killough, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews, extended family, cherished colleagues, and friends. Among them is her niece, Janet Krakowski.
The wake for Sister Favata will be held at Holy Family Chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. The Mass will be livestreamed.
