Sparta Girls’ Lacrosse Rallies Strong, Salutes Survivor Coach’s Battle

The Lions Girls’ Lacrosse team of Pope John XXIII Regional Catholic High School in Spart delivered both on and off the field on May 22. The team defeated Immaculata 11-7 in its Play Pink Game while raising more than $1,800 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s fight against breast cancer.

The victory improved Pope John’s record to 11-7 on the season. Yet, the real triumph came in the form of community support for breast cancer research and a heartfelt halftime tribute to Assistant Coach Erin Laypan, a stage three breast cancer survivor. She was recognized for her strength, determination, and continued inspiration to the team and community.

“Coach Laypan embodies everything this game represents,” said a team spokesperson during the ceremony. “Her presence on our sideline reminds us all that we’re stronger than any challenge we face.”

The Play Pink Game exceeded fundraising expectations thanks to Pope John lacrosse families and community supporters. The funds support Susan G. Komen’s mission to eradicate breast cancer through research, care, community outreach, and advocacy programs. The team asked each lacrosse family to make a $25 donation.

With the regular season complete, Pope John’s 11-7 record earned them a berth in the NJSIAA Nonpublic Tournament.

“Our girls played with extra motivation tonight,” said Head Coach Rob Zywicki. “Knowing we were playing for such an important cause and honoring Coach Laypan gave them an emotional boost that translated into excellent team play.”
