Filipino inaugural Independence Day event ‘highlights traditions’

The Diocesan Commission for Catholic Filipino Ministries (DCCFM) on June 22 held its inaugural Independence Day celebration with Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney, who celebrated a thanksgiving Mass in St. James of the Marches Church in Totowa.

A celebration of fellowship and Filipino culture followed the Mass. It included Filipino food and spontaneous dance and song performances by community members. The event “fostered a sense of community and cultural pride among Filipino parishioners,” said Elmer Maximo, DCCFM president.

Maximo called the inaugural Independence Day celebration “a joyous and meaningful event, highlighting the rich cultural traditions and community spirit of Filipinos in the Paterson Diocese.” He expressed hope for future celebrations “with the promise of continued fellowship, cultural sharing, and unity.”
