Filipino Catholics honor homeland’s independence with Mass, fellowship

On June 21, the Paterson Diocese commemorated the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day with a Thanksgiving Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Dover.

The celebration, which included fellowship after the Mass, brought together Filipino-Americans from around the Diocese to share their heritage and Catholic faith. The Diocesan Commission for Catholic Filipino Ministries (DCCFM) organized the event, continuing its mission of honoring faith, culture, and community.

Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney presided over the Mass, joined by several Filipino priests serving in the diocese. Father Cerilo Javinez, parochial vicar of Sacred Heart of Jesus/Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, led the concelebrants. They included Father Leonardo Lopez, pastor of the parish; Father Emerson Francisco, parochial vicar of St. Philip the Apostle Parish in Clifton; and SOLT Father Alejandro Vergara.

The liturgy featured traditional Filipino hymns and colorful cultural attire reflecting the vibrant spirit and devotion of the Filipino Catholic community.

Assisting at the altar was Elmer Maximo, a candidate for the diocesan Permanent Diaconate, who is a newly installed acolyte and DCCFM president. He was joined in service by Deacon Jose Rivera of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in the Haskell neighborhood of Wanaque.

After the Mass, fellowship continued, featuring Filipino food. Various Filipino organizations held cultural performances, including singing and dancing, to celebrate their customs and traditions. The celebration was a display of unity, hope, and gratitude, reminding everyone that freedom is not only a civic blessing but also a sacred calling to live in love, service, and faithfulness to God.
