DePaul Catholic, Pope John to play for state football championship

It will be a battle of two Paterson Diocesan high school football teams this Friday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford for the Non-Public B state championship.

DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne and Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta, respectively, the Spartans vs. the Lions, will play each other for the championship.

Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney shared a post about the Diocesan rivals featuring photos of the schools’ principals — Russell Petrocelli, principal of DePaul and Gene Emering, principal of Pope John. He wrote: “Congratulations to the football teams of our Pope John XXIII Regional High School and DePaul Catholic High School, who each won a semifinal game this weekend and will play each other for their League Championship at MetLife Stadium this coming Friday at 11 am!! One thing we know: our Diocese will have another Championship this year!! Con-gratulations to all the players, coaches, and school communities!!”
