The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist community in Paterson, on a sunny April 18 afternoon, marked Good Friday with the Via Crucis — or the Way of the Cross: a reenactment of Jesus’ passion and crucifixion through the neighboring Paterson streets and in the cathedral. The play started at noon with a procession through the city streets dramatizing Jesus’ suffering on the way to Mount Calvary and drawing strong emotions from many of the thousands of onlookers. The Via Crucis ended with Jesus’ crucifixion, presented at the altar of the cathedral. Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney then celebrated at 3 p.m. the Good Friday Liturgy of the Passion of Our Lord.
