Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney celebrated an annual Mass with presidents and principals of Catholic schools in the Paterson Diocese on Aug. 19 for the opening of the 2025-26 school year. The liturgy took place in the oratory of the Diocesan Center in Clifton, N.J.

The Mass was part of a day-long back-to-school gathering of the elementary school and high school principals and three high school presidents. It included a meeting and commissioning of the presidents and principals for the start of the academic year.

In his homily, the bishop said to the school presidents and principals, “We know the value we have in our Catholic schools and the value we strive for in Catholic education, especially you, as our leaders of our schools and our teachers.”

Meetings followed the Mass in the Molloy Center at St. Philip the Apostle Church in Clifton, N.J. Concelebrating the Mass with Bishop Sweeney were Father Paul Manning, diocesan vicar for evangelization and vicar for education, and Father Peter Clarke, principal of Morris Catholic High School in Denville, N.J.
