About 120 altar servers from around the Paterson Diocese, N.J., united with Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney to deepen their appreciation of the Eucharist and their role at Mass during the annual Altar Servers Day on Sept. 12 at the Evangelization Center at St. Paul Inside the Walls in Madison, N.J.
Parents of the altar servers, parish priests, altar server coordinators, and diocesan seminarians also attended and participated. The youth were also encouraged to begin thinking about their vocation during the day, which combined faith, food, and fun.
Altar Servers Day included lunch followed by time for the youth to play sports and games on the palatial grounds of St. Paul’s.
The event ended with a Mass and an outdoor Eucharistic procession led by Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney. Father Charles Lana, diocesan vocations director, and Father Pawel Tomczyk, diocesan vicar for evangelization at St. Paul Inside the Walls, concelebrated the Mass with the bishop.
The Vocations Office, Knights of Columbus, St. Paul Inside the Walls, and diocesan Youth Ministry collaborated for Altar Servers Day.
On social media, St. Joseph Parish in West Milford, N.J., called Altar Servers Day “a beautiful opportunity for our servers to spend time together, have some fun, and grow in their understanding and love of serving at the altar.”
