125 years of Mass celebrated at Dover parish

Sacred Heart & Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Dover, N.J., on Dec. 11, welcomed Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney, who celebrated a Mass del Sagardo Corazon to commemorate two events: the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and 125 Years of the Mass at the parish.

Father Leonardo Lopez, pastor of Sacred Heart & Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, concelebrated the Mass with Bishop Sweeney. The church’s altar displayed images of Our Lady, while many parishioners wore traditional dress. The date of the Feast Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of Mexico and the Americas, officially falls on Dec. 12.

In 2018, Bishop Emeritus Arthur J. Serratelli issued a decree that canonically merged Sacred Heart Parish, an Anglo population, and Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, a Spanish-speaking faith community, into one parish, “Sacred Heart and Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church.”

Sacred Heart was founded in 1904 as a mission of St. Mary Parish in Dover to serve the local mining community. Holy Rosary was established in 1959 to serve the local Hispanic community. The church buildings are five blocks apart in the Morris County municipality.
