Permanent deacon from first ordination class marks 50th anniversary

Deacon Mario Munoz marked the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a permanent deacon of the Paterson Diocese on June 16 with Masses in Spanish at Our Lady of Victories (OLV) Parish and Our Lady of Lourdes (OLL) Parish, both in Paterson. Bishop Lawrence Casey ordained him on June 15, 1974, as part of the historic first class of 28 permanent deacons in the diocese. A native of Chile, Deacon Munoz served both parishes until his retirement. Pictures depict scenes from an afternoon anniversary Mass at OLL on June 16 celebrated by Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney. Bishop Santiago Rodriguez of the San Pedro Macoris Diocese in the Dominican Republic concelebrated the Mass with Bishop Sweeney and other attending priests. A few deacons assisted. Bishop Rodriguez celebrated a morning Mass for Deacon Munoz’s anniversary earlier that day at OLV.
