A funeral Mass was held on Aug. 21 in Holy Family Chapel in the Convent Station neighborhood of Morris Township for Sister Teresa Regina Confroy, a Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth.
Sister Confroy died on Aug. 12 in Complete Care at St. Vincent’s in Cedar Grove. She was 91. She was a Sister of Charity for 73 years.
Born in Newark, Sister Confroy was the youngest of 11 children. She entered the Sisters of Charity in 1951.
Sister Confroy earned a nursing diploma from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Paterson, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Seton Hall University in South Orange, and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
She began her ministry as a second-grade teacher at St. Michael’s School in Union City. She studied at the College of St. Elizabeth, now St. Elizabeth University, in Convent Station, at the same time.
Afterward, Sister Confroy began her more than 65 years of service in health care as a registered nurse. She served at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson for more than 23 years in many positions and leadership roles, including director of nursing and vice president for patient care services.
Sister Confroy also served in the Ocean County Health Department for more than 17 years in many positions, including supervisor of clinic services and assistant director of public health nursing.
Sister Confroy also served the Sisters of Charity. She was the first coordinator of the Health and Lifestyle Transition Services Office and later was a nurse for the motherhouse community in Convent Station.
In 2022, Sister Confroy moved to St. Joseph’s in Cedar Grove, where she resided until her death.
Sister Confroy was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Jessie Coakley, Mildred Ehret, Elizabeth Scheick, Cecilia Meringer, and Mary Mayer; her brothers, Edward Confroy Jr., Andrew Confroy, Benedictine Father Mark Confroy, James Confroy, and Benedictine Abbot Thomas Confroy; her nieces, Barbara Davis, Marie Koelbel, and Sister of Charity Elizabeth Scheick; and her sister-in-law Patricia Confroy.
Sister Confroy is survived by the Sisters of Charity and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
