Pope John Academic Team clinches County Cup

The Academic Team of Pope John XXIII High School in Sparta won the County Cup after notching a victory in the Sussex County Academic Bowl Tournament on March 4 and 5 in Sparta High School.

Pope John competed against Sparta, Lenape Valley, Newton, Jefferson, and Hopatcong high school teams. In the final round, Pope John faced Lenape Valley, which ended in a tie and required an overtime round of five additional questions. Pope John won in overtime.

The Academic Bowl is a round-robin, with each round consisting of 40 questions in five categories: math, science, history, language arts, and general knowledge.

Pope John’s Academic Team members are Team Captains Julius Czarnecki and Zachary Nowel, along with James DeSilver, Marco Concha, Emily Fuchs, Ben Janiszewski, Lucas Liakhovitch, Alexandra MacMullin, Vincent Notarnicola, Ethan Poplawski, Cooper Randall, Kyle Sobczyk, and Tristan Vollero.
