Permanent deacon in first ordination class marks 50 years

Deacon Stephen Marabeti of St. Joseph Parish in Lincoln Park celebrated his 50th anniversary as a permanent deacon of the Paterson Diocese, during a Mass on July 6. Bishop Kevin. J. Sweeney celebrated the Mass, which several priests concelebrated. Deacon Marabeti was ordained in 1974 in the first class in the diocese’s permanent diaconate.

The jubilarian belonged to the steering committee that helped start the diaconate program with Msgr. Kenneth Lasch, now retired, directed by Bishop Lawrence Casey, fifth bishop of Paterson. Through his work with the U.S. Catholic Conference of Catholic Bishops on the Permanent Diaconate, he traveled around the country to encourage other dioceses to start diaconate programs.

Deacon Marabeti pursued a career in education. He taught history at DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne from 1964 to 1969. Afterward, he taught history a nd other subjects at Parsippany Hills High School for 32 years before retiring.
