Clifton Tank Pull roars past goal, veterans receive boost

The New Jersey Army Tank Pull Challenge, held on June 8 in Clifton, broke the record for raising $2 million for veterans since its inception 15 years ago. For the fifth consecutive year, Paterson Diocesan Catholic Charities collaborated with the Knights of Columbus to organize the much-anticipated fund-raiser.

Held on Clifton Avenue in Clifton, the event challenged teams to pull an 80,000-pound tank mounted on a flatbed truck. This impressive feat drew participants from diverse backgrounds.

This year’s event featured a record 53 teams competing, including 11 veteran partner teams, 11 Knights of Columbus teams, and 10 labor union teams. Competitors included diocesan seminarians and religious sisters. Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney showed his support with his presence.

All proceeds directly benefit New Jersey veterans, with special attention paid to those who have been wounded in combat. Catholic Charities supports hundreds of veterans in need throughout the state daily through various programs and services.

The event was made possible by 20 major sponsors and teams, including Fairleigh Dickinson University, BravenHealth, Visions Federal Credit Union, Knights of Columbus, ComForCare Home Care, Marcal Paper, Jeffery Realty, Inc., New Jersey Veterans Network, Passaic County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

The event also received support from dozens of veteran stakeholder partners, a strong army of volunteers, and countless cheering spectators. There were family-friendly activities alongside the main Tank Pull competition.

“This event proves that when our community unites with purpose, extraordinary things happen. What started as a test of strength has become a powerful testament to compassion, service, and solidarity with our veterans, ” according to Catholic Charities. “To every participant, sponsor, volunteer, and supporter who made this possible — ‘Thank you’ from the bottom of our hearts. We are humbled, inspired, and incredibly grateful for each of you.”
