Bishop Serratelli’s latest book offers reflections on Nicene Creed

Bishop Emeritus Arthur J. Serratelli’s new book, Living Our Faith Day by Day, helps the faithful utilize the Nicene Creed for spiritual benefit daily. The book offers an introduction to the 1,700-year-old Creed, along with a year’s worth of daily prayers and reflections.

Published by Catholic Book Publishing Corporation in Totowa, Living Our Faith Day by Day offers daily meditations that contain an inspirational quote, reflection, and prayer based upon the Nicene Creed.

The book is “a contemporary look at this timeless prayer to deepen our understanding of the faith and develop a faith-informed prayer life for all those who desire a closer walk with Our Lord,” according to Catholic Book Publishing Corporation.

Bishop Serratelli’s latest book arrives in the year of celebrations in the Church, marking the 1,700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, which established the Creed. A Scripture scholar, he made a presentation, “Why We Recite the Nicene Creed,” at Corpus Christi Parish in Chatham Township on July 22.

The bishop taught systematic theology at Immaculate Conception Seminary for two years and, from 1977 to 2002, taught Sacred Scripture and biblical languages at the seminary. He earned a doctorate in sacred theology in 1977 from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

As part of its celebration of the Universal Church’s Jubilee of Hope 2025, the Paterson Diocese has commemorated the anniversary of the Nicene Creed. The diocese hosted three ecumenical roundtables in each of its counties earlier this year, where Msgr. Raymond Kupke, diocesan archivist, spoke about the Creed. Diocesan Catholics also joined with other Christians in reciting the Creed during an ecumenical prayer service at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson on June 22.

In the introduction to Living Our Faith Day by Day, Bishop Serratelli writes, “The Nicene Creed continues to be one of the most influential means not only to express the Catholic faith in its integrity but also to pass it on from one generation to the next.”

The Jan. 20 entry is one of several that meditate on the Creed’s declaration, “I believe in one God.” The bishop quotes Pope Benedict XVI: “The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one because God is love and love is an absolute life-giving force.”

“By sending his only Son and the Holy Spirit, God revealed himself as an eternal exchange of life: Father, Son and Holy Spirit giving and receiving all that are from each other. Made in God’s image, we become truly human in communion with each other,” Bishop Serratelli writes in the entry’s reflection.

Then he offers a prayer, “Lord, keep me generous in loving others as you love me.”
