The Paterson Diocese recognized 78 individuals, couples, and families for their outstanding service to the Church and the world with the Vivere Christus Award. Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney presided at the awards ceremony in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson on Oct. 20.
Families, friends, fellow parishioners, priests, and religious filled St. John’s to watch the honorees receive this special award. The award acknowledges the value and importance of the laity in the Church. Recipients were nominated by their parishes.
The medal given to each awardee has the Latin phrase “Vivere Christus Est,” which means “To live is Christ.” Bishop Emeritus Arthur J. Serratelli created the award in 2009. The Diocesan Office of Worship coordinated the event.
During the ceremony, Bishop Sweeney blessed the awards. Salesian Sister Theresa Lee, diocesan chancellor and delegate to religious, and Miriam Perez, lector for the first reading in Spanish, called the names of each recipient and their nominating parish to come forward to receive their medals from the bishop.
After the ceremony, the Vivere Christus Award recipients could take photos with Bishop Sweeney.
